A Channel Deeply Cut Ms Tera Lea Ferguson 9781479281312 Books Reviews
I truly enjoyed this book. It kept me very interested and I had a hard time putting it down. Really liked
the way she put her heart into this book.. I am looking forward to her next one.. Thank You Tera I am a fan of
yours..
This is a story about a man reconciling his demons and it just sucks you in! I honestly did not want to put it down. The characters are easy to identify with and I could picture the scenes, they are so beautifully detailed. Ms. Ferguson did an excellent job, and I look forward to reading more of her work!
As a first novel, this is a surprising book; it is well crafted and quite engaging. The protagonist thoroughly explores his present and his past; we are drawn in by his need to find closure and the mystery of what happened to bring him to where he is when he begins his story. It is not an easy journey his emotions are high and very raw at times; his memories are stark and often gut-wrenchingly unpleasant. This is a man who took many a beating; and though he ran from the past, he must face it to move beyond it.
Gabe has returned to his hometown, tiny Dixon, MT. Nothing has changed; people are still into everyone else's business, doing exactly as he expects. He, on the other hand, is what nobody expects--and they do not recognize him. As he realizes this, he recalls and relives memories of abuse at the hands of his father, of failing to protect his twin sister, and of how he never did "fit" what was expected. Surprisingly, he also realizes that his assumptions of people were also wrong or mistaken; this revelation forces him to begin facing his own issues, though without any great speed. His attempt at connection with another outcast in the town, Olivia, is just as jumbled and broken as his own heart and emotions.
The political aspirations of the townsfolk provide another facet to the novel. Gabe and Olivia stand in the way of a strange sort of development planned by prominent members of the community. The "restoration" of the Travers cabin and mountain will revitalize the town through tourism, but feels like a lie to those who suffered under the Travers name. Both Gabe and Olivia struggle to find the happiness that has eluded them from childhood on.
The writing is poetic, but sometimes feels unpolished. This is not criticism; the novel clearly creates the "small-town" feeling that isolates Gabe and the reader; the rough edges to the prose heighten the emotion of tense scenes.
This is not a book for young readers; it is very mature in tone and content. It will be appreciated best by readers who can follow the back and forth chronology and heavy emotional content.
A Channel Deeply Cut - I thoroughly enjoyed this book - really kept my interest and was easy to follow. Am familiar with Montana and tried to figure out just where it was taking place
